Research Chair in Implementation and Evaluation Science

Walter Wodchis Appointed as the Inaugural Research Chair in Implementation and Evaluation Science at Trillium Health Partners Institute for Better Health

At Trillium Health Partners’ (THP) Institute for Better Health (IBH), we are committed to creating a new kind of health care for a healthier community using scientific expertise, innovative approaches and partnerships. Through health services research, the development of new models of care and improving patient and provider experience, we are focused on creating, implementing and evaluating scalable solutions that will impact the health of our community and beyond. To help us build research expertise and capacity, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Walter Wodchis as a Senior Scientist and our inaugural Research Chair in Implementation and Evaluation Science. As a collaboration between THP and the University of Toronto’s Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, Walter will be advancing and leading research to inform health system organization, delivery and resourcing for our community.

An internationally recognized scientist in health economics, financing, policy evaluation and integrated care, Walter is leading research to understand and improve health system integration and performance. In his current work with the Health Systems Performance Network (HSPRN), Walter is influencing the design of the Ontario health care system by examining the impacts of integrated care across the care continuum and resource utilization.

As a growing research institute that is embedded in one of the country’s largest community-based hospitals, the IBH is the ideal location for Walter to lead research that will improve the health our community. “I joined the Institute for Better Health because of its research focus on population health and integration with THP” Walter explains. “This role will provide me with the opportunity to use my approach to evaluation and data to develop research programs that will benefit the community and health system as whole.”

Walter will be leading and informing research that is aligned with the needs of our community and can be applied to reduce costs and improve population health and the patient experience. “I am looking forward to collaborating with THP clinicians, scientists and leadership, patients, community partners and research organizations to create and implement meaningful, impactful and scalable solutions,” says Walter.

“This is fantastic news for us,” says Dr. Robert Reid, Chief Scientist at the IBH. “Walter’s expertise will truly help us understand how to implement and test meaningful solutions that can translate research into policy and practice to create a learning health care system.”

Walter is the second IBH Research Chair, joining Dr. Joan Murphy, Dr. Michael E. King Research Chair in Surgical Oncology. Both Research Chairs has been made available through the generous support of donors working with the Trillium Health Partners (THP) Foundation.
