Children's Services

Trillium Health Partners offers a range of services for babies, children and adolescents, including neonatal services, paediatric services, and health and fitness services.

At Trillium Health partners, we understand that going to hospital can be a challenging experience for children and their families. That is why we strive to create a warm and welcoming environment and provide unique supports such as our Child Life Specialist, who helps children and their families cope with stressful life events, particularly as they related to health care experiences and our “Poke Program,” an initiative for children admitted to hospital aimed at making procedures – such as IV starts and bloodwork – a more positive experience.

Child Life Specialist

The child life specialist is an expert in child development who works to ensure that life remains as normal as possible for children in health care settings. They promote effective coping through play, self expression activities and age-appropriate medical preparation and education. As advocates of family-centred care, child life specialists work in partnership with doctors, nurses, social workers and other members of the health care team to meet the unique emotional, developmental and cultural needs of the child and family.

Services Provided by the Child Life Specialist:

Child life specialists focus on the psychosocial and developmental needs of children, collaborating with families and other healthcare providers to:
  • Prepare children for medical procedures or treatment using language that children understand
  • Introduce coping strategies to help reduce anxiety and enhance cooperation with the health care team
  • Provide support and distraction during medical procedures
  • Offer opportunities for play and expressive activities, to encourage normal development and a sense of FUN despite challenging circumstances
  • Promote family-centered care by providing information, advocacy and support to families of paediatric patients

Integrating women’s and children’s care in 2025

Currently, our women’s and children’s care and services are being provided at both Mississauga Hospital (MH) and Credit Valley Hospital (CVH). Beginning in 2025, all women’s and children’s care and services, including labour and delivery, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and other gynecological and reproductive health services, will be provided at CVH until the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital, as part of The Peter Gilgan Hospital, is complete. Bringing these services together in one place will provide a more patient-centered care model for patients and their families, as well as hospital staff.

Select paediatric clinics will remain at or adjacent to the Mississauga Hospital, including the Family Care Centre and Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Services. Once all plans for outpatient care are finalized, a comprehensive list of service locations will be made available.

All our emergency departments (EDs) will remain fully equipped and able to provide safe, accessible, high-quality care for children and people with pregnancy, reproductive and/or gynecological emergencies. If specialized care or admission is required, the hospital’s dedicated teams will work with the patient and their family to ensure they receive the right care.

The full integration to CVH is planned for 2025. This change will offer a common experience for patients and families and enable teams to more effectively manage the increasing demand in the community. Necessary renovations at CVH over the coming year will provide additional Birthing, NICU and clinic space.

THP is committed to communicating and engaging with our patients, providers and staff, community, and partners as we advance our mission of building a new kind of health care for a healthier community. Existing patients with plans to deliver at the Mississauga Hospital this year can rest assured this is not an immediate change and their birth will proceed at their previously identified location. As the planning and transition to CVH moves forward, information will be available on THP’s website and social media channels and shared with the hospital’s staff and partners.
