New Health Centre and Long-Term Care Homes Coming to Mississauga

Trillium Health Partners’ property in Mississauga selected as site for two new long-term care homes

In December 2019, THP in partnership with Heart House Hospice (HHH) announced the location of a new health centre that will improve access to long-term and hospice palliative care for the people of Mississauga. The Province has selected this development for a faster build and an additional 420 LTC beds, bringing the total to 640 beds.

On July 21, 2020, the Ontario government announced its plan to accelerate the building of two new long-term care (LTC) homes in Mississauga, at Trillium Health Partners’ Speakman Drive property.

What does this mean for the community?

The initial concept for this development included one 220-bed long-term care home, one 10-bed residential hospice, and two health services buildings. This was a multi-year initiative with an estimated timeline of five years to completion. With this new announcement, the development will now include one hospice building, one health services building, and two LTC homes, more than doubling the number of beds to 640. With the accelerated build plan in place, construction of the two LTC homes has a target completion in 2021. This means faster access to long-term care for the people of Mississauga, as well as relieving capacity pressures at THP’s hospital sites by providing patients and the community access to the health care services they need, in the most appropriate place, and within their own  community.

Quick Facts about Long-Term Care in Mississauga:

  • Trillium Health Partners serves more than 1.75 million patients visits each year – a number that continues to grow.
  • The number of seniors is set to triple by 2031.
  • Mississauga has the fewest long-term care services, which means more people are waiting in hospital for care in the community.
  • There are 4,560 people on the wait list for placement in LTC home in Mississauga (as of August 2019).
  • The average wait time is 26% longer than the provincial average.

How can I find out more about the project?

THP is committed to working closely with neighbouring residents, local businesses, government partners, patients, families and the people of Mississauga and to engage the local community on the revised development, even in these extraordinary times. Based on the current guidelines for the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no in-person engagement. Details on upcoming opportunities for engagement will be shared in the coming days and weeks.
