Outbreak Updates

Outbreak Information

Trillium Health Partners (THP) places the safety of patients, people, and the community first. Our Infection Prevention and Control (IPaC) Team monitors new infectious diseases and takes proactive steps to manage outbreaks in the hospital, working to prevent the spread of infections.

What is an Outbreak?

An outbreak happens when there is suspected spread of an infection or specific organism amongst patients or staff within a specific area of the hospital over a certain time period. The Ministry of Health sets the rules for defining outbreaks.

What Happens When an Outbreak is Declared?

When the IPaC team declares an outbreak, extra steps are taken to prevent the spread in order to protect patients, staff, and the community. These may include:

  • Placing patients on isolation when needed
  • Ensuring the availability and use of the proper protective equipment (PPE)
  • Screening and testing patients and staff as needed
  • Closing affected units to new admissions and transfers
  • Tracking potential exposures
  • Enhancing cleaning and disinfection
  • Enhancing hand hygiene and safety audit
  • Limiting visitors in the affected area
