A dobutamine stress echocardiogram is used for patients who are unable to exercise adequately. Dobutamine is given through an IV to make your heartbeat faster, simulating exercise.
How to Prepare for Your Test
- Do not eat or drink for 4 hours before the test.
- Avoid caffeine for 24 hours before your appointment, including coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, and energy drinks.
- Your doctor may advise you to stop certain medications before the test. Follow the instructions provided.
- Bring a list of your medications.
What to Expect During the Test
- An IV will be started in your arm.
- Resting images of your heart will be taken.
- Dobutamine will be given in stages to increase your heart rate.
- Your heart rhythm, blood pressure, and symptoms will be closely monitored.
- The test usually takes 60 to 90 minutes.
