What is an EEG?
An EEG (electroencephalogram) is a simple, safe test that looks at the electrical activity in your brain. It does not hurt. Small discs called electrodes are gently placed on your head.
Physicians use an EEG to help find issues such as seizures or injuries.
What Can You Expect During Your EEG Test?

When you arrive, check in 30 minutes before your appointment. You’ll be taken to a quiet room and asked to lie down on a stretcher.
The EEG technologist will clean small spots on your scalp and place about 20 tiny discs (electrodes) on your head using a gentle sticky cream or glue.
Your brain’s electrical activity will be recorded for 20–40 minutes (or longer if your physician asks).
During the Test
You may be asked to:
- Breathe quickly for a short time
- Look at flashing lights
These steps help your physician understand how your brain works.
After the Test
When the test is finished, the discs will be removed. Your hair may be damp after cleanup, so you might want to bring a scarf or cap.
Sometimes, you may notice mild skin irritation where the discs were placed, but this goes away quickly.
Your physician will review the results and share them with you in 1–2 weeks.

Electroencephalogram
Preparation for Visit
- Wash and dry your hair the night before. Do not use conditioner, hair cream, spray, or gel. These make it hard for the discs to stick.
- Remove hair extensions, weaves, or wigs before you come.
- You can eat, drink, and take your regular medicines.
- If you have a bad cough or have a fever, please call to reschedule.
- If the test is for a child, please bring their favorite toy, blanket, or stuffed animal. You may also bring a phone or tablet.
- Very young children may need to be wrapped snugly (swaddled) so they can stay still.
- Do not sleep on the way to the hospital. The test works best if you are sleepy.
- Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment.
If You Need a Sleep-Deprived EEG:
Adults:
- Sleep less the night before. For example, if you usually sleep 8 hours, you may only sleep 4. Your physician will tell you how much.
- Do not use caffeine (coffee, tea, soda) to stay awake.
- If you have to stay up most of the night, bring someone with you for safety.
If You Need a Sleep-Deprived EEG:
Children:
- Under 3 years: wake up at 4:00 am
- Ages 3–11: wake up at 2:00 am
- Age 12 and older: do not sleep at all
If You Need a Melatonin EEG
- Know the melatonin dose your physician gave you and how to take it.
- Take melatonin as your physician told you when you register for your test.

Getting to the EEG Lab at Mississauga Hospital: There is a long walk from the registration area to the EEG lab. For your comfort and safety, it’s best to bring a friend or family member to support you during your visit.
Registration: Register on the ground floor in the Neurology Clinic, then make your way to 3F EEG Lab.
Parking: Arrive early; parking can be difficult to find.
Test Duration: Most EEGs take about 20–40 minutes, but some may be longer.
Tips: Bring a scarf or hat for after the test because your hair will be damp.
Results: Your doctor will review the EEG and share results in one to two weeks.
Safety: The test is painless and safe. There is no electricity going into your brain, only recording activity.
