Accreditation is an external peer review process that uses national standards of excellence to assess the services that health care organizations provide to their patients. In November 2013, Trillium Health Partners (THP) completed its first-ever Accreditation as a merged organization, and was awarded Accreditation with Commendation by Accreditation Canada. THP achieved an overall score of 99% compliance, having met all of the required organizational processes and priority processes.
Accreditation Canada is an independent, not-for-profit organization that sets standards for quality and safety in health care and accredits health organizations across Canada and around the world. The accreditation decision an organization receives is based on its performance in three main areas:
- Meeting the requirements embedded in the standards;
- Achieving applicable Required Organizational Practices*; and,
- Soliciting feedback from staff on work-life quality and patient safety culture.
*Required Organizational Practices (ROPs) are evidence-based practices that mitigate risk and contribute to improving the safety of health services.
In the final Accreditation Report the surveyors noted, “Much work is underway to develop a ‘one hospital culture’ for Trillium Health Partners. The leadership of the organization has committed to quality and patient safety, access and sustainability as strategic priorities for the organization.”
Planning for the next accreditation in 2017 is well underway. Our sustainability plan is designed to ensure we stay up-to-date on all required practices and accreditation standards on an ongoing basis while not diverting effort from our day-to-day focus of delivering the highest quality patient care.
